There are several types of psoriasis: plaque (regular), guttate, nail psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis (inflammation of joints),erythrodermic psoriasis. Lesions caused by psoriasis are called psoriatic spots. Basically, these spots consist of areas of chronic inflammation and hyperproliferation of lymphocytes, macrophages and keratinocytes of skin combined with abundant angiogenesis (excessive formation of new blood vessels).
What is a nature of psoriasis?
Psoriasis is believed to have a genetic origin and occurs as an autoimmune disease. It means that patient’s immune system attacks his own cells.
According to the latest research in immunology, so called T-cells stimulate the stem cells in deep layer of skin. It causes an abundant proliferation of keratinocytes (and excessive exfoliation of upper skin, as a result). T-cells are also responsible for the process of inflammation. Currently there is no evidence what makes immune cells produce a ‘psoriatic’ signal due to absence of appropriate model for study.
The therapy of psoriasis mainly bases on immunosuppressants oriented on immune system inhibition and a decrease if inflammation. However, these preparations may not be effective enough because in the end of treatment T-cells can renew the process of stem cells stimulation. As a result, clinical symptoms occur again. Furthermore, the immunosuppressants have a lot of side effects, such as nephrosis, tachycardia, high blood preasure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increase of sensibility to bacterial, fungal, viral infections.
What is a treatment of psoriasis with stem cells?
The study of healthy skin donors have demonstrated that proliferative signal from T-cells of patients with psoriasis is not able to stimulate the non-psoriatic keratinocyte stem cells. It means that if psoriatic keratinocyte stem cells from patient’s skin are replaced by new ones, it will cause the non-sensitivity of these cells to proliferative signal. Finally, the psoriatic lesions and inflammation will disappear.
In this way, stem cells derived from adipose tissue (fig.2) act as immune system modulators but NOT suppressors. Moreover, stem cells do not cause any allergic reactions or side effects because they originate from patient’s organism.

The stem cells injection will not only reduce the clinical symptoms of disease (fig.3), but will also lead to a general improvement of patient’s health. It is specially important for those who have already taken a traditional treatment with immunosuppresants and hormones.
